2019-2020 TOMODACHI KAKEHASHI Inouye Scholars Program Application

This program is an amazing opportunity, and it's great that you're interested! Please carefully read the description and requirements and complete the entire application below. Selections will be made based on your application and either an essay or video submission, which you can submit here.

This is a week long, all expenses paid trip to Japan including airfare, hotel, meals, and travel expenses. Students will learn about and experience Japanese culture as well as have the chance to visit a Japanese University and stay with a Japanese family. In exchange, students will help to host university activities for a group of Japanese students when they visit HPU on a date to be announced. Participants will also be required to create an action plan on how to share their experiences and what they gained to the HPU community.

Travel Dates:
March 2, 2020 - March 10, 2020
Please note that participants will be missing two days of classes and must inform their instructors and work with them to make up any lessons and/or assignments.

TOMODACHI KAKEHASHI Inouye Scholars Program Objectives:
・Promote deeper mutual understanding among the people of Japan and the United States
・Enable future leaders of U.S.-Japan exchanges to form networks, and
・Help young people develop wider perspectives to encourage active roles at the global level in the future.

・HPU degree-seeking student with at least a 3.0 GPA
・Must be at least 18 years old, with a high school degree
・Good academic and judicial standing
・U.S. Citizen or Permanent Resident
・Participate in activities before and after the trip and to create a project to share your experience.
・Assist with activities during the week (dates TBD) to host the group of Japanese students visiting HPU

*Unfortunately, students who have Japanese citizenship, students who have studied or stayed in Japan for one year or more, and students who have previously participated in a Kakehashi program are not eligible to participate.

Preference will be given to students who:
・Have never been to Japan
・Have been involved in the study of Japanese language and/or culture

Application Deadline: In order to be considered you must submit this application and your essay or video submission by Monday, November 25, 2019 at 5pm HST.
